TERN — The Elegance of Three Parts

Making a product smaller often means much more than simply reducing its dimensions.

In a fountain pen in particular, the nib, ink cartridge, cap, threads, and enough length for comfortable writing all have to come together within the same body. That was exactly the starting point when I designed Tern: to create a metal fountain pen that is genuinely compact when closed, yet fully usable when opened. At the same time, I wanted to remain true to Thorn Mill’s design language — its simplicity, the purity that allows the raw material to speak for itself, and the distinctive character that can be recognized at first glance.

The result is a simple cylindrical pen measuring just 103 mm in length and 11 mm in diameter when closed.

But the detail that ultimately defined Tern’s character arose from a different problem.

Where Does the Cap Go?

With a small fountain pen, posting the cap on the back rather than setting it aside offers an important advantage. It extends the pen and gives it a more natural length in the hand.

At the same time, I wanted Tern to remain completely cylindrical. As with many Thorn Mill pieces, I was looking for a form that does not immediately announce what it is — something that can simply be appreciated as an intriguing metal object in its own right. After all, cylindrical forms, smooth surfaces, raw materials, and simplicity are among the fundamental characteristics of Thorn Mill’s design language — perhaps its most recognizable ones.

The conventional solution is to make the rear section of the body narrower so that the cap can fit over it. But with Tern, that would have meant giving up the uninterrupted cylindrical form I specifically wanted to preserve.

So the question was no longer simply where the cap should go:

How could I post the cap without breaking the cylindrical form?

The solution was to thread the cap onto the rear of the pen rather than slide it over the body.

But that created another problem.

The threads needed for posting the cap would remain exposed at the back when the pen was closed. Technically, there was nothing wrong with that. Visually, however, even a few millimeters of exposed thread would disrupt the simple, uninterrupted form I was trying to preserve.

That small problem led to one of Tern’s most characteristic elements.

TCR — Thread Cover Ring

TCR, or Thread Cover Ring, is a small metal ring with a completely smooth exterior and internal threads.


When the pen is closed, the TCR screws over the threads at the rear of the body. Because its outer diameter matches the body, it continues Tern’s cylindrical form, making it difficult at first glance to even notice that a threaded connection exists underneath.

But the TCR has another purpose.

When the cap is removed and threaded onto the rear of the pen, the cap threads at the front are now exposed. The TCR is removed from the rear and screwed over these front threads instead.

The system simply reverses:

Wherever the cap goes, the TCR goes to the other end.

When the pen is closed, the cap is at the front and the TCR at the rear.

When the pen is ready for writing, the TCR is at the front and the cap at the rear.

In both configurations, the unused threads remain hidden beneath the TCR, allowing Tern’s simple, uninterrupted cylindrical form to be perfectly preserved.

One Small Part, Two Functions

Instead of solving the problem by adding more mechanical components, it became possible to give a single part two functions.

And the TCR is never an accessory that needs to be stored somewhere while the pen is in use. Whichever end does not carry the cap carries the TCR.

In the end, this small ring became an important part of both Tern’s function and its appearance.

Mechanical Detail Within Simplicity

Looking at Tern from the outside, it may not be immediately obvious how the TCR system works.

And that is partly the point.

I don’t believe the mechanical details of Thorn Mill pieces always need to announce themselves. The fact that a solution exists does not mean it has to be visible or visually dominant.

Once the TCR is in place, it almost disappears. It becomes a continuation of the body, blending into the design along with the threads it conceals.

As with the rest of Tern, form here cannot be separated from the way the object is made.

Gold-Plated Kaweco Nib and Standard Cartridge

I did not want Tern’s compact dimensions to make everyday use unnecessarily difficult.

For this reason, the pen uses a proven gold-plated Kaweco fountain pen nib and widely available standard international ink cartridges.

With a closed length of only 103 mm, the internal space is deliberately kept very limited. Tern was therefore designed around a standard cartridge rather than a converter.

The goal, after all, was not to squeeze as many features as possible into a small body, but to do what is necessary as simply as possible.

Tern — The Elegance of Three Parts

The word tern has two meanings in English. One is the tern, the small, elegant and agile seabird. The other, much less commonly used today, refers to a group or set of three.

Both meanings unexpectedly reflect the character of the pen.

When Tern is closed, what you see is a single cylindrical object composed of three fundamental sections: two smooth sections with the characteristic textured grip between them.

The three are distinguished by their surface textures, yet their matching diameters and geometry make them appear as parts of one continuous form.

The TCR is not one of these three fundamental sections. It is an auxiliary element that allows this form to remain intact in different configurations. With the cap at the front, it conceals the rear threads; with the cap posted at the back, it conceals the front threads — keeping the mechanical solution behind the three-part design as unobtrusive as possible.

And so the two meanings of the name meet in the same object.

A small and elegant tern.

And a simple metal object that, at first glance, appears divided into three parts: a tern.
