Tern Hammered – Hand-Hammered Brass Pocket Fountain Pen

Tern Hammered is a compact pocket fountain pen individually handcrafted from solid brass in the Thorn Mill workshop in İznik, Türkiye.

The design began with the idea of creating a cylindrical form that is as simple and uninterrupted as possible. When closed, the cap and barrel continue at the same diameter, while the straight-knurled center section adds a distinct mechanical character to the minimal form and provides a secure grip.

On Tern Hammered, this clean geometry is combined with a surface individually shaped by hand-applied hammer blows. The subtle irregularities of the hammered brass catch and reflect light from different angles, giving the pen a lively and distinctive character. Because the surface is created entirely by hand, no two Tern Hammered pens will ever have exactly the same texture.

One of Tern’s defining design features is its Thread Cover Ring (TCR) system.

When the pen is closed, the TCR covers the threads at the rear of the barrel and completes the cylindrical form. To write, the cap is unscrewed and the TCR at the end of the barrel is removed, allowing the cap to be threaded onto the back of the pen. The TCR can then be fitted over the exposed threads near the nib section. This allows Tern to maintain a clean, finished appearance both when closed and while writing.

At only 103 mm / 4.06 in when closed, Tern is designed to be compact enough for pocket carry. Its slim 11 mm / 0.43 incylindrical body becomes a full-length writing instrument when the cap is posted.

Tern uses standard international short ink cartridges, making it easy to refill without requiring a proprietary or brand-specific cartridge.

Every Tern is individually machined on a manual lathe, without the use of a ready-made pen kit. Turning, threading, knurling, component fitting and final surface work are all carried out in the Thorn Mill workshop.

The surface of each Tern Hammered is also individually hammered by hand in the workshop. The subtle variations created by the hammer blows are not imperfections, but part of the individual character of each pen.

The solid brass is left uncoated. With use and contact with the hand, it will naturally develop a patina, allowing each Tern to acquire its own character over time.

Hand-Turned Olive Wood Case

A complementary case designed specifically for TERN is available separately, individually hand-turned from natural olive wood.

Designed around TERN’s compact dimensions, the case is completed with a threaded cap machined from solid brass in the workshop. The knurled surface of the cap creates a visual and tactile connection with TERN’s characteristic center section.

Each case is individually made in the Thorn Mill workshop in İznik. Due to the natural grain and color variations of olive wood, no two cases are exactly alike.

The Olive Wood Case is sold separately and is not included with the TERN fountain pen.

Each Tern Hammered is individually machined and hammered by hand. As a result, the shape, distribution and way the hammer marks reflect light will naturally vary from one pen to another. These variations are part of the character of an individually handcrafted object rather than a mass-produced product.
